When it comes to choosing massage therapy equipment and supplies, a portable massage table should be one of the first items on your list. Your massage table is your most essential piece of equipment. Here are some tips on choosing the right portable massage table for you.
If you're a massage student or a recent graduate preparing to start your career, cost will most likely be a major influence in your decision about which massage table to buy. To get the most bang for your buck, look for a portable massage table package that includes a table, headrest, armrest, and carry bag. You might even be able to find a package that includes side arm extenders or bolster pillows. If you're a bargain shopper, you should be able to find good deals on massage tables for sale.
As a general rule, the shorter your arms are, the smaller you will want your table width to be. You need to be able to reach across the table comfortably without straining your body or messing up your body mechanics. Standard width in the massage table industry is 30 inches.
If you plan to take your portable massage table with you for home or office visits, you'll want to look for a lightweight massage table. Aluminum is the lightest material for a table, although manufacturers are coming up with new designs to make wood tables lighter and stronger. If your table is too heavy to lift and carry comfortably, you may want to invest in a table cart to save your neck and back.
The thicker the massage table, the more comfortable it will be for your clients. But the padding should be firm enough to provide the right amount of resistance for deep tissue massage and similar modalities. Keep in mind that with thinner padding, you can always add an egg crate and a fleece table cover for extra thickness.
